Ahhh, the family holiday trip. I remember many a night in the back of the family station wagon, the hum of the tires and the regular flashing of city streetlights on our twice-yearly trips to New York to visit our family. As much as I loved the family trips they certainly were not without incident or stress for my parents. I remember one year my sister’s suitcase blew off the roof of the family wagon, and I remember a story from the family lore of at least two destroyed rims on the freeway in a Pugeot which meant that parts were totally unavailable. Safe travel is a hugely important topic for most of us in the winter.

A common point of worry for drivers is safety for long trips to visit family out of town. While nothing can mitigate all risk, there are a lot of things you can do to help ensure your trip is safe, worry free and successful. In today’s blog I will go over the key steps for safe driving on holiday travels.

Pre-Trip Inspection

The first and most important thing to do before a trip is to have a certified technician with an established and thorough inspection process check over your car. You can not have safe travel in an unsafe automobile! We do this at Pro Auto for 49$ for most cars. We check all the lights, battery, alternator, tires, brakes, suspension, exhaust, filters, fluids, and check for leaks. While this is not a troubleshooting process, it is a very, very thorough vehicle inspection and we will catch most of the concerns that can be found. No inspection, no matter how in depth, can predict every future failure, but we will catch most upcoming issues. We use a tablet-based system so we take photos for you and email and text them to you. You don’t have to be here to see what is recommended on your car. We will build an itemized parts and labor estimate for any work we recommend, and we will also email and text that to you. We call this a Digital Vehicle Inspection, or DVI and I will blog about that again soon!

Plan Your Trip

A little planning goes a long way. Will you be traveling at night? Will it be cold, or can you expect winter weather? Planning allows you the opportunity to expect the unexpected and be prepared. If you’re driving an EV (electric vehicle) you must plan for charging stops, and if you’re driving a rare car or a Euro it may be wise to have some knowledge of repair shops on the way. “Tires tires tires tires tires…it’s all about the tires….no matter what you do to that car, none of it matters more than those four black donuts on the corners.” Such was the wisdom from a veteran Saturday night short track stock car driver to a 25-year-old me two decades ago. Better shocks, better springs, more power, a better setup, heck, even a better driver, can not make a racecar improve more than a new set of good race tires.

Over the course of the last 100 years the amount of research and development put into the automobile defies the imagination. Countless billions have been invested into better brakes, better suspensions, steering, weight savings, efficiency, all with the goal of building more fuel efficient, faster lighter cars that stop better, handle better and are less expensive while being more fun to drive. However, nothing makes enough of a difference to overcome poor traction from worn tires, particularly in wet weather. This article illustrates this, specifically regarding wet weather. The true story is likely much more serious as well because the causes of accidents are usually determined by police officers who have little to no training in using scientific analytics to determine the cause of an accident. The true number of deaths to improper equipment is likely exponentially larger.

Even in states like Virginia, where we have a well run State Safety Inspection program (even our small shop performs over 400 inspections per year) often have tire wear standards far below industry recommended standards. Virginia State Safety Inspection guidelines specify that to fail for wear a tire must be worn below 2/32nds of an inch at three points across the tread at three points around the tire. That standard ensures that any tire that fails must be very, very worn. By comparison the Consumer Reports advocacy group says here ( https://www.consumerreports.org/…/when-to-replace-your…/ ) that tires should be replaced at 4/32s of an inch to avoid severe reductions in wet weather tractions.

How to stay safe:

When You Should Change Your Brake Fluid So You Don’t Cost Yourself Money?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and if you have, I envy your peaceful existence) you know cars have changed MASSIVELY in the last 50 years. You can now drive a 6000 lb SUV that hs 450 HP with a TEN speed automatic transmission that gets 15 MPG around town or 22 on the highway! You can drive a 145 hp small sedan that gets 30 mpg around town and 40 on the highway! These modern cars will set their own following distance, keep to their own lanes, have integrated bluetooth phone connections, navigation, back up cameras….the tech is endless!

Brake Fluid Hasn’t Changed

However, the standard regular old DOT 3 brake fluid that we’ve been using for at least 50 years hasn’t really changed much. Most cars either use Dot 3 or Dot 4 brake fluids, and the Dot 4 is backwards compatible with Dot 3. Basically Dot 4 is very similar, but has slightly better corrosion resistance properties and a higher boiling temperature. Your brake fluid needs to be clean, free of water and full. Hygroscopic What?

Brake fluid is what is known as hygroscopic- meaning that it will absorb moisture out of the air. This is why your brake cap has a seal and you should only add fluid from a clean, sealed container. Your brake system is designed with enough reserve capacity so that you should not need to add fluid until your pads are worn out. As the pads wear, the volume of fluid in the calipers increases and the volume in the reservoir of the master cylinder decreases. There is a sensor mounted in the reservoir that turns on the red brake warning light if the fluid level gets too low. Basically the fewer times the cap is removed, the better off we are.

Brake Fluid Maintenance

Due to the pesky nature of brake fluid to absorb water, a problem arises over time. The boiling point of the fluid will drop, increasing the risk of the fluid boiling under extreme braking. When that occurs the pedal will feel hard, but pushing on it will not result in further loss of speed- yes, you lose your brakes! Biiig Problem! An expensive but less dangerous result of dirty fluid is damage to brake components- calipers, cylinders, or worse the expensive ABS system components. We can prevent all of this by changing the brake fluid periodically, about every 2-3 years. This process is referred to as a Brake Fluid Flush.

Flush, not refill.

To replace the brake fluid effectively and completely, we use pressurized flush equipment to perform a brake fluid flush. A trained technician must perform this job. The vehicle MUST be test driven first, then a brake inspection performed, and all bleeders must be verified to be operational. Then, the technician uses a suction wand on the machine to vacuum out the old brake fluid. Then the flush machine is attached to the reservoir with a sealed adaptor and set to push fresh fluid at 10 psi into the reservoir. The technician attaches the suction adaptor to the bleeders and opens them, allowing the fluid to flow from the machine through the entire system, pushing ALL of the old fluid out. A turkey baster and some fresh fluid is NOT a brake flush and is a waste of money. The majority of the dirty fluid is in the calipers and cylinders, and the only way to get it out is to use flush equipment!

Save Money! “A problem vs. The Problem” How to avoid wasting money in Auto Repair!

Good morning, everyone! Today I would like to cover a common problem in troubleshooting, which is establishing what is the Actual cause of a symptom vs. a problem the car has that needs to be addressed but will not resolve the symptom.

We see this issue frequently and when it is coupled with poor communication, this often can result in a client either spending scarce resources on a job that will not fix the immediate concern or feeling that they were taken advantage of either through misdiagnosis or due to outright dishonesty.

Philosophy

While we chat about this, I would like to first discuss Hanlon’s Razor (razors are philosophical concepts that help you to cut through complex situations and ignore unnecessary clutter). Hanlon’s Razor says:

“Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence “

So, keep this in mind. Auto Service professionals, by and large, are just that- professionals. They are at work, they care about their craft, and they want to do the right thing. Any “professional” that makes recommendations will tell you why they make them.

Generally, when you spend money and do not get your car fixed right the first time the problem isn’t greed or fraud- generally it is under trained, under equipped or un-paid technicians causing the problem.

How WE avoid this

First, we mandate our technicians attend 6 classes per year at a minimum to stay up to date on our ever-changing systems. We also pay them for their time in these classes and management attends as well. We also do in-house training weekly for our techs to review best practices and keep our processes up to date.

Secondly, we are fully equipped. We have 4 scan tools, and three different online, professional service information services that we access on Every.Single.Car.

Third, we mandate a FULL visual inspection WITH photos of every vehicle we service. We perform an All-Scan of every onboard computer on every troubleshooting job.

Fourth, we pay our technicians for doing the work . Real troubleshooting is work, it requires tools, testing components on the vehicle, checking for TSB’s and Recalls, capturing data from data streams or oscilloscopes, pressure or volume testing, the list goes on and on. Technicians almost always have an incentive plan of some sort. If they are not given credit for accurate testing, they WILL guess to get to where they can put parts on the car. That is not a technician failure, THAT is a management failure. Can you imagine asking a CNA to check a patient in and take their blood pressure, temperature, height, and weight without being paid for it? Yet shops do this every day to their technicians. We are leading the way forward for a better environment for the technician, the customer, and our company.

Finally, we use a “traffic light” system in our inspection report, as well as organizing the recommendations on the work order to communicate if the job recommended is for your initial concern, a safety or immediate need concern, or a maintenance or upcoming concern. We see cars ALL THE TIME that have had hundreds of dollars of “repairs” made that made no difference in how the car runs. This is nearly ALWAYS due to UNDER diagnosing, not MISdiagnosing. A computer scan is not a diagnosis. It is just ONE step in a process!

The conclusion from the above is that the engine had a failed number 4 ignition coil that was missed on the initial “diagnosis”. The complexity of the intercooler and lack of access made life hard on the original troubleshooter. There is excessive blow-by on that cylinder, which leads us to advise this customer that the engine life has been shortened, but we can in fact get this engine running well for the meantime by replacing the coil.

All of these photos are emailed to the customer along with the rest of the inspection report!

Why You Should Choose Us

The average engine has become a complex beast, with high-tech advanced materials, turbochargers, direct fuel injection, and high-tech engine management. Long gone are the days when it was either the plugs, the carburetor, or internal when an engine ran poorly. There is simply no substitute for an educated, well equipped technician who does a thorough inspection of the vehicle AND THEN does the specific testing to isolate the cause of the concern.

We do this, and we do it consistently, we document thoroughly, and we maintain a high level of transparency. When a car comes in with a fouled spark plug and a misfire, we do not miss that the vehicle also has excessive blow-by. We not only determine that the vehicle runs rough due to the fouled plug, we also gain access, remove the spark plugs, and perform a cylinder leakage test to assess internal engine condition. We FULLY assess the situation, and the overall condition of the vehicle so we can not only tell you what things need to be addressed, but when and why!

What are “Diagnostics” or “Computer Diagnostics” on a car?

Ahhh, the most misunderstood term in Auto Repair. The dreaded “D” word. To most people, “Diagnostics” means “computer diagnostics” which leads them to the understandable mistaken conclusion that the computer in question is the thing that is actually doing the diagnosing. Unfortunately, it isn’t that easy.

Here at Pro Auto, we don’t say “Diagnostics” in that sense because of that very misconception. We say “Testing and Troubleshooting” because that more accurately reflects what happens when we work to figure out what is wrong with a vehicle. The technician does the diagnosing; the computer is a tool in their toolbox.

We have 5 levels of testing and troubleshooting, each building upon the last, and each including more advanced testing techniques. Everyone in our business can perform a Level 1 effectively, but Levels 4 and 5 are reserved the challenging cases!

To Begin With…

We established a process for troubleshooting that starts with accurately assessing where the vehicle is at drop off. This is vital because you cannot know where you’ve gone if you don’t know where you started. This includes a check in with photos, and an initial walk-around, as well as a quick chat with the driver or owner about what the concerns are. We document the mileage, the presence of any warning lights, and the condition of the vehicle.

Our process continues with a technician taking a short test drive to verify any concerns and also verify certain systems are working. Brakes, wheel bearings, transmissions, and many other components can only be verified by operating the vehicle.

The DVI, it’s a game changer!

We then follow the checklist outlined in our tablet based Digital Vehicle Inspection system, where the technician will visually inspect the lights, horn, HVAC, under hood fluids and filters, belts and hoses, the wipers, cabin air filter, spark plugs, brakes, frame, and suspension. The technician will also perform an “All-System Scan” with a factory compatible, fully up-to-date scan tool. This is the part often referred to as a “computer diagnosis”. Aftermarket hand held code readers often will not read and report all codes- this is why a fully functioning factory equivalent tool is needed. Photos are taken of the relevant items and the report is sent to the advisor for initial review and to begin the estimating process. The DVI system is instrumental in effective communication with our clients.

Four Simple Ways to Decrease Auto Repair Expenses

Hi, and welcome to the blog of all things auto repair by yours truly, Michael Leech. This time around we’re going to discuss some quick, easy ways to prevent unnecessary repair bills. Everyone loves to NOT give their auto technicians money so i am hoping this one will really be a popular topic. I’m mainly going to focus on EASY things that ANYONE can manage. Zero high-tech stuff here, today.

It’s about the Water!
The single largest thing that really creates big auto repair issues is unmanaged water. Whether that water is salt water that corrodes your frame (here’s looking at you, Toyota) or water intrusion from a flood (hello gulf states, this is you) or rust from road treatments (your turn, New England) water is a BIG issue. In fact, all FOUR of our topics are water (errr, fluid) related!

I’m a little Rusty…
So the first, and foremost thing we see here in auto repair shops in the Mid-Atlantic is rust. The worst offenders are from up North; generally the midwest or New England. A close second are all you beach hippies tooling around at OBX without washing your cars off. So this EASY tip is actually one of the most important. When your car or truck is exposed to salt water in any capacity you MUST take the time to clean off that undercarriage. There’s the Underwasher located here: https://www.theunderwasher.com/ , as well as several power washer type attachments on Amazon. Give it a good hosing off after any exposure and your vehicle will last much, much longer. Considering that a 2000 Toyota 4Runner in great shape is still worth 5000-8000 dollars we have to get by the idea that rust is just going to kill our cars and that they are disposable. The numbers on car values no longer support that kind of behavior!

Keep me clean!
Ok, this one is for our friends in more temperate climates! You can prevent other water control issues by cleaning around the sunroof and the cowl. The picture to the left shows the location of the sunroof drain- you can barely see it! Since it is a small tube, it clogs easily. You can clean it by gently feeding a weed eater string through it. When you park anywhere near a tree, that tree will drop it’s tree stuff on your car (see picture below), and you’ll need to clean that stuff up. Otherwise it will fall into the cowl drains or the sunroof drains and obstruct them. Once those drains are obstructed the water often overflows into the car. Since modern cars have lots of wiring connections under the seats and in the dash, this can create some SERIOUS auto repair nightmares!

Stay Hydrated!
Our next liquid related topic is a well known one. Simply know what your car’s necessary fluids are, and keep those fluids at their necessary levels and change them on their appropriate intervals. We keep a service that gives us maintenance schedules for each car and we’re always happy to tell you the next service is due. We also have access to Technical Service Bulletins to give us insight as to when certain fluids should be changed ahead of the factory intervals. Common automotive fluids are engine oil, brake fluid, engine coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, differential gear oil, and transfer case oil. This topic varies widely from car to car so do your research and be sure you protect your investment. The picture of the water pumps below illustrates what happens when coolant condition and quality are not maintained. This car needed a new engine due to this problem. Avoid unnecessary auto repair expenses through great maintenance!

Vacuum Me!
A final, and slightly less known issue is to be SURE to manage interior messes, debris and coins. A penny or dime will fit directly into a power port and will cause a short circuit and blown fuse. Attempting to put your iPhone into your tape deck will damage your phone (yes, this has happened). Your airbag system control unit (called a Sensing and Diagnostic Module) is usually located on the flat floor space under your center console. If you’re resting your soda or coffee in there daily and it spills everyday, you can damage the wiring or module. Early 2000’s era Nissans were famous for coins falling into the Navigation/Cd assembly because people put coins on the shelf. Turns out CD players really hate coins. So pay attention to what’s going on in your car and keep it spiffy! You’ll save yourself some money!

How to know when you need to have your brakes checked.

Hi, everyone! ASE Master Technician Michael Leech here. Today, I’m going to review the automotive brake system, how it works, and when you need to know when your car’s brake system needs repairs or maintenance! The base brakes are often regarded as “simple” but the system does have some nuance that requires technical knowledge to get it right the first time, every time. Remember, “Amateurs practice until they get it right, professionals practice until they never get it wrong”- Harold Craxton.

Overview

The automotive brake system is arguably the most important system on your vehicle. The penalties associated with crashing carry expenses that can dwarf any costs you imagine. The medical bills alone, to say nothing of the possible loss of life, have costs that are almost unimaginable. I quote the great Joe Scarbrough, winner of hundreds of races, “the brake system is the fastest way to modify the vehicles travel”. This system should be inspected by a qualified professional ONCE A YEAR!

As I like to say, the brake system is basically a bunch of pieces of metal rubbing against each other. From Physics 101 we know energy can be neither created nor destroyed. We transfer the car’s kinetic energy to thermal energy through friction. This WILL result in noises and vibrations.

The vast majority of automotive brake systems on the road today are disc brake systems. These steel rotors (discs) are sandwiched between the hub and the wheel and turn at the same speed as the wheel. The caliper, which is the workhorse of the brakes is a hydraulic clamp mounted to a fixed point on the suspension. The pads keep the rotor from damaging the caliper, and provide the correct level of friction- not too much, not too little. To stop, hydraulic pressure from the brake master cylinder (created by your foot on the pedal) pushes inside the caliper which squeezes the rotor with the pads and slows it down.

Brake Noises

Brakes always make noise, generally though, the noises are at a pitch above what the human ear can hear. This is why brakes frequently make super high pitched noises when there is a friction issue or debris problem, such as dust. The other common noise you hear from brakes is caused by the “squealer” or “pad wear indicator”. This can be a high pitched scratching squeal at low speeds or a loud “screeeee” when lightly applying the brakes. No matter what, you need to know that when your brakes make noises, it is time to get them checked.

Good, Good, Good, Good Vibrations

Another common issue is brake pedal pulsations. The sensation is that the brake pedal is “pushing back” or “vibrating” against your foot while you are pressing it. A pedal that slowly and rhythmically pulses while stopping is often caused by “Brake Rotor Thickness Variation” also known as “Warped Rotors”. This is frequently caused by pad material building up on the surface of the rotor and creating a high spot. This high spot hits the caliper piston once per wheel revolution and shoves it back it. This creates fluctuations in fluid pressure that you feel in your foot. Once again, this means it is time for brake check,

You’ve been Warned!

Our brake systems primarily rely on two or three warning lights. Refer to your owners manual for your specific vehicle for exact information. The main, and most concerning light is the RED warning lamp, that usually says “BRAKE” in red letters. This light should turn on for a bulb check (with the yellow ABS light if equipped) at startup and then remain off. The red brake light can mean that fluid is low, system pressure is low, the parking brake is on, or that there is another significant brake system malfunction. See your repair shop immediately. The yellow ABS light is concerning but not as much of an emergency. This lamp means that the Anti-Lock brakes have a fault, generally this is a sensor failure and is less urgent that a RED brake light. Troubleshooting the ABS system requires an educated technician and factory specific scan tools. Do not replace parts based on trouble codes alone!

The All-Important Fluid

Automotive brake systems use hydraulic fluid to do the work. This fluid is a propylene glycol fluid, and the ethanol in the fluid means the fluid is “hygroscopic” or will absorb moisture from the air. This characteristic prevents rust inside the metal components of the brake system, but means the fluid needs to be periodically changed. The advantage of a hydraulic system is that it is excellent at transmitting force from one point to another with low friction losses. Cars also use a “brake booster” to further increase the amount of pressure you can create with your foot pressing the pedal. Your brake fluid should be changed every 2-4 years, depending on the manufacturers recommendations. We use only full synthetic DOT 4 fluid in our brake flushes, which is a much better fluid for protecting you from temperature related brake fade and ABS problems than DOT 3. Dot 4 also absorbs less water from the atmosphere than DOT 3.

A final note about your brake system is that you will sometimes feel a “pull” from your brakes. In short when you press the pedal you’ll feel your vehicle try to change direction, requiring you to turn the wheel to keep it straight or on the correct path. This is usually caused by a damaged hose or caliper. Once again, this is an urgent situation, and should be checked immediately.

Low, soft brake pedal is another concern. This is when your brake pedal doesn’t have that nice firm feel to it, or travels all the way to the floor when you press it. This indicates a severe problem that has likely reduced your stopping distance. In many cases it is best to tow the vehicle in to be safe.

A Brief Primer on Automotive Warning Lights

If you’re like most of us, you’ve been happily driving down the road when you glance down and “Uh-Oh”, “What is THAT Warning Light for?!” This brief blog is here for you to go over the most common warning lights, what they mean, and what you should do.

The first and most important thing you need to know is that your owner’s manual is the gold standard for information about your car. There are far too many different cars and trucks out there for this simple blog post to hope to cover all of the different warning lights. We’ll touch on the common ones here, and you’ll have to do individual research on your exact car.

The BULB CHECK. All cars will illuminate all lights when the key is turned on, but the engine is not started. This is a handy way to make sure your warning lights work (no burned out bulbs) and to see which systems your car is equipped with. The first key piece of information regarding a warning light is the color of the light. In general, if you remember nothing else, remember that AMBER lights mean “Caution” and RED lights mean “STOP NOW”.

This means there is an issue with the primary braking system. Either the fluid is low, the parking brake has been left on or there is a pressure loss. Check the brake fluid to ensure it is full. When there is a pressure loss the brake pedal will feel soft and spongy or will travel father than it normally does. DO NOT DRIVE a car with a low/soft brake pedal. Tow the vehicle in rather than risk lives!

This amber light is the most common light to see on a car- it is now federally regulated that all modern vehicles have a system to monitor tire pressures, because tire failures from inadequate pressure have caused many accidents in the past. Your tires perform at the their best when correctly inflated (the difference in 20 feet of stopping distance is 10-15 mph in an accident) so staying on top of them is very important! When you see this light, the first thing to do is to visually inspect your tires. Radial tires OFTEN WILL NOT LOOK FLAT EVEN IF VERY LOW, this is due to their strong sidewalls. After the visual inspection, check the air pressures with your handy digital gauge (YOU DO HAVE ONE, RIGHT?), and add air as needed. Tires with over 20 psi can be driven at moderate speeds to a gas station, under that number and you can cause internal damage to the tire that can cause a catastrophic failure later. You can buy a small electric compressor for less than $25 that runs off of your 12v power outlet- this is a wise investment.

This light is federally regulated and must either be a picture of an engine, the words “Check Engine”, or the words “Service Engine Soon”. This light is a MALFUNCTION indicator. This light means the engine control computer performed a self-test on a sub system and had two consecutive failures. The system continuously self-tests, so there is no “resetting” the light, as soon as you start driving again the computer will resume self-testing and illuminate the light again. You’ll need to see a technician for this one, the diagnostic processes for this light range from simple to the most complex work we do on an engine management system. In general, you can safely drive your car to the shop, especially if it is running normally. When the engine runs abnormally and the Check Engine Light is on, or even worse, Flashing, you should get the car to a technician quickly to avoid any other damage.

This Red colored warning light means that the engine has inadequate oil pressure. Customers that are unfamiliar with it call it the Genie Lamp light or the Watering Can light. An engine that is low on oil will have low oil pressure, but even a full engine can lose engine oil pressure. This light is an emergency, driving with low engine oil pressure will quickly destroy the engine. Ensure the oil level is full (incorrect oil is better than no oil in an emergency) with the correct grade of oil, and if it is TOW THE CAR TO THE SHOP. If it is low, correct the oil level, and start the car and see if the light goes off. If it does, you can usually drive the car to the shop, as long as the Oil light stays off.

This light can be yellow or red and looks like a thermometer in water. This light means that your engine is overheating. DO NOT DRIVE a car with an overheating engine. This is the second fastest way to destroy the engine. DO NOT open the cooling system on a hot engine, SEVERE BURNS WILL OCCUR. Allow the engine to cool (takes 1-3 hours), ensure the engine is full of coolant, and as long as it is not far, and the engine does not overheat, you can drive it to the shop.

Keep in mind that when this light is on, the vehicle will not have anti-lock brakes, which will result in more difficulty in keeping control in wet weather. Be sure to allow for greater stopping distances in wet weather. Bring the car for troubleshooting and repair.

This amber light means the Supplemental Restraint System (Airbag) has a failure. SRS systems self-test continuously so the presence of this light means a failure is occurring and the system is shut down, THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT WORK IN A CRASH if this light is on. Keep in mind modern cars are designed so that the SRS system works in conjunction with other engineering characteristics to protect you in a crash, this system is VITAL to your safety. While there are many other warning lights, these are the most common, and the ones every driver should know at a minimum. The best advice I can give is to read and understand your owner’s manual, and of course, call if you have any questions! Michael

This is going to be pretty philosophical for a blog about car repair. You know, typically, a car repair website blog is “blah-blah flux capacitor, turn signal pressure, muffler bearing, blah-blah”. Today I want to touch on concepts that are a bit more ambiguous. The actual reasons that customers choose their car repair facility is a topic that is very well studied, documented, and is an extremely important item that we discuss daily in our industry. We use large scale studies, and our own personal experience in these conversations and decisions. So, without further ado, on to the meat of the topic!

The most important and number 1-4 reasons for choosing a car repair facility are NOT price! However, the majority of customers ask for that FIRST. The FIRST thing they want to know is “How much is it for you to do job X”. The MOST important facet of the experience is at the END of the experience (from drive-away to long-term usage) and isn’t the price number, it is the VALUE. Value is hard to measure- it’s ambiguous. People love to ask price because they feel it is the one thing they can nail down. Contemplating price+tech knowledge+warranty+job quality+courtesy+friendliness+on-time delivery+convenience+parts quality=VALUE is extremely difficult up front. However, with long term usage of the car and shop, it becomes obvious.

Many shops “hide” many facets of their operations specifically so that you can’t quantify them and they can manipulate you on price. Just like every other business in the world, when you see “FREE”, “SALE”, “DISCOUNT”, etc, you are being manipulated on price. You might ask, “How do you know!?!” I’ll tell you how I know; because I have studied economics, and accounting, and because I’ve run a business for 12 years.

We don’t pay our bills by the job, or by the day, or by the week. We pay our bills by the month, quarter, and year. At the end of these long terms our Revenue ($ in) multiplied by our Gross Profit Percentage minus our Expenses must be a positive number. If it is not, we lost money, and NO business exists when it loses money. A business can lose money for at most a few months or a year, and then it will fold. Expenses are simply too high. These are facts, not opinions, and must be understood to understand why a “Sale Price” results in LOWER value. You want to use a business that makes a good profit, because THAT is a business that excels at delivering to their customers.

So to evaluate what makes a customer happy when it isn’t price, let’s think about WHY a business would CHOOSE to lower Gross Profit on a job when the goal is to have HIGH Gross Profit. Simple- it’s a loss leader. You must DO something to bring in customers. Since Price manipulation is very easy to see and implement, many businesses choose that tactic- there’s the AD shouting “ITS FREE!!!”. So how do they make money? By overcharging you for literally every single other thing you buy, AND reducing expenses on the “FREE” or “DISCOUNTED” item.

We have TWO ASE Master Technicians on staff. We’re both damn good technicians, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in tools, equipment, knowledge, and education. That means we expect to be paid accordingly for our work. Work here, just like your job, comprises EVERYTHING we do during our hours here, PLUS our study time after hours. Scan a car? Yep, it’s work. Install a wiper blade? That’s work, too. If you are a chef, when you are cooking, you’re working. Making a salad? Work. Cleaning your knives? Work. THIS is why a “FREE” diagnostic is always bad. A good technician earns 35-45% of the billed labor in total compensation (salary, benefits, etc). This means they earn anywhere from 30-50$ for each billed hour. You think a business can give away several hours a week at that rate? Would you? Of course not. A “FREE” diagnostic is worth every penny you paid for it, and usually worth less. Go ahead, install 300$ worth of parts and use 8 hours of someone’s time and still have a broken car. How much was that “FREE” diagnostic worth? at 100$/hr for labor it cost -1100$. Still think it’s free?This happens because good diagnostic techs won’t (also “don’t“ and “shouldn’t”) work for free and bad diagnostic techs can’t perform a diagnosis correctly.

So how do the “it’s FREE” shops do it? Well, number one, they lie to you. There’s nothing “FREE”, they’re gambling that they will “sell” you high profit services to make up for the “FREE!”. What if you don’t “need” anything? Oh, trust me, you’re going to “need” something! They build the cost of the diagnosis back into the job. I have seen this in hundreds of competing estimates. You have lost the “trust”, “tech knowledge”, “parts quality”, “friendliness” from the Value equation! You know it, and we all know it. The trust is gone because you know in your heart they have to sell you something at an inflated price to avoid losing money. The tech knowledge is gone because the good techs have no time for games- they’re good BECAUSE they’re ethical and smart, and they study. They won’t stick around for that game. The parts quality is gone because you MUST minimize your losses and compromising parts quality is childishly easy to hide. The friendliness is likely gone because of the stress that comes from that kind of sales pressure.

THIS is why the customer dissatisfaction in auto repair is ridiculously high. Too many people compromising value to chase price when it isn’t what makes them happy in the first place.

Don’t buy into the hype. PAY people for what they do, EXPECT high quality, and CHOOSE those who deliver. THAT fixes the entire equation. The techs get paid for their work, the owner (either individual or corporate) makes enough money to guarantee the work correctly (long-term) and train their employees, AND provide conveniences like shuttle service, an Uber, or a discount rental.

Look at the reviews- high VALUE shops create good reviews and customers that speak well of them. They also create very few people that go online and “slam” them with the “one star temper tantrum review”. Ask your friends for referrals. Good shops do much less of the “FREE” and “SALE” stuff in advertising and much more in relationship building advertising. When you compare shops, compare apples to apples. When you price shop ask “Why is one estimate higher?”. If the answer is “their techs are paid more because they are better, their parts quality is higher, their warranty is better, they’re more professional, they’re more convenient” then you very likely are looking at a higher value, and THAT is what makes you happy. Don’t be misled that you can get “adequate” repairs cheaper at a place that yells “We’re Cheap!” because they can’t afford NOT to sell you everything they can.

Good shops don’t quote price, they explain their value. They don’t try to beat a price, they try to do a very good job, at a fair price, and deliver on time, every single time. They communicate, explain, and empathize- not pressure, steer and control. They understand that this is NOT a transaction- it is relationship. They get that when you leave the business after your repair their obligation to you follows you- it doesn’t end when you pay the bill.

The vast majority of the customer dissatisfaction is related to improper diagnostics, come-backs, and incorrectly performed repairs. Every single one of these things is caused by the people working in the business and a culture of “sales transaction” vs “client satisfaction”. A business that yells “FREE STUFF” cannot be a “client oriented” culture, because a client oriented culture focuses on long term relationships, not transactions and a “FREE STUFF” ad just delivers transactions.

For instance, when you pay us to troubleshoot a problem, you have paid us for our time. We don’t HAVE to make another sale to earn a profit. We can advise you of your best course of action and be honest and frank about your car, and help you manage your investment into the second most (or most) expensive (and important) thing you own. We’re not steered by the need to “make up” lost revenues on a “loss leader”. Even our oil change specials make us a small profit- because we don’t do giveaways to bring you in. That’s our business model- we’re not here to “control” the customer with price, we’re here to create a relationship with our clients that lasts, and results in high levels of satisfaction.

Hopefully this rather long-winded blog post has helped you understand a little more about the auto repair industry and how you, and a customer, can become a client with a shop that will result in BOTH you and the shop having a happy and long term business relationship.

It’s All About Brakes

There can be no doubt that the most important vehicle consideration from a subsystem perspective is the braking system.

Since an accident that happens at a speed 2x greater than another speed has an impact force of FOUR times the severity, slowing the car down to prevent accidents and reduce their severity is the number one safety factor.
WHY ‘O WHY then does EVERYONE look for the CHEAPEST BRAKES!?!?

When automakers design braking systems they have many engineering considerations to factor in, the weight of the car, it’s tire size, it’s width, it’s projected operating speeds, etc. They use this information to come up with the size of the brakes. But wait, there’s more!!!

With the wheel off, you can actually see the brake system components. You can see the 5 holes where the wheel would be attached to the rotor. The caliper squeezes the rotor with the pads, slowing the car down, much like a bicycle brake squeezes a bicycle wheel. The brake pad is composed of a steel backing plate with the brake friction material either glued or riveted to it. The brake friction material is a metal-like substance that is hard enough to resist braking temperatures and forces, but soft enough not to damage the brake rotor.

The actual brake pad friction material can be constructed of an almost infinite number of compounds. Different brake compounds result in different brake operating temps, different levels of friction between the pad and the rotor, and different lengths of pad service life.

This is where the quality question comes into play. Cheap steel is softer and less stiff than good quality, high carbon steel. The cost difference between cheap steel and high carbon steel or nodular iron is huge. When you buy a cheap, economy brake rotor, you are buying cheap Chinese steel, with low carbon content. The actual coal (China has a huge coal industry) is much lower quality that the coal used to make high quality steel or nodular iron. Keep that in mind, it will be important later.

Now, the actual friction compound of the pads is very important. The manufacturer will choose a friction compound to operate at a certain temperature- the brake pad will generate the most friction and last the longest in a certain temperature range- usually 400-1000 degrees Fahrenheit. The pad and rotor composition must be “paired” so that the rotor can withstand the heat that the pads generate. Pads with a “harder” friction compound generate less friction for the same temperature, resulting in higher clamping force needed to get the same “Whoa”, and will generate more heat during braking. However, harder pads last longer, which all car owners love. This is the balance the engineer must find: Longevity, temperature, friction, and clamping force.

New cars usually come with great brakes. The compound is designed specifically for that car model, and the quality and size of the brake rotor. The system is designed to work together. However, those pads are expensive, because they are made just for that car line. The pad compound is made as a liquid, in a giant vat, then formed as it cools. Now, if they change the compound everytime they make a different batch of pads, the manufacturing cost goes way up. To make less expensive brake pads and rotors, several corners are cut.

BUT I CAN SAVE SOME MONEY!! Actually, you don’t when you look at the math. Even NOT accounting for crashing (which carries the highest possible cost- injury or death) good quality, correctly matched and correctly installed brakes last much much longer than the cheap ones. Cheap “pad slap” (brake jobs using cheap pads and not servicing the rotors) almost ALWAYS results in noisy brakes, which WILL Drive.You.Nuts. That costs around 80-100 dollars. This brake job usually will not last over 15-20 thousand miles. so the cost per mile is about 5-6 cents per ten miles for 15-20 thousand miles, then service will be needed again. So for 50k miles your total brake investment is at best 250.00, at worst it is 350.00. You’ve also had to contend with repeat visits to the auto repair shop, using your time and inconveniencing you.

Our standard ceramic brake job offers none of those concerns and offers these benefits:
The brake job will usually last 50-80 thousand miles, usually never makes noise, provides great brake feel, and the rotors seldom warp. That job costs around 280.00 for most cars. That equates to 4-5.5 cents per ten miles, and you visit the shop many fewer times over the course of your vehicle ownership. I put our very high end pads and rotors on my dad’s F-150 when it had 71k miles on it. They lasted over 80,000 miles- he sold the truck at 150k miles before they needed to be done again! That brake job wsa the highest end job we offer, with Adaptive One brand pads and Ultra Premium rotors- that brake job retail cost was just under 500 dollars. Sound like alot? 6.2 cents per ten miles, and no brake job needed for 7 years! That’s right, an average of 71 dollars per year, and NO brake noise, NO vibration, NO worn out pads, and NO unsightly brake dust to clean of the wheels before it damages the coating on them!!!

In conclusion, you get what you pay for, but when viewed from an investment perspective it is FAR better money spent to get the good stuff, AND do a FULL brake service. This results in:

Less likelihood of a crash
Better use of your time
Better use of your money!

New Car Dealers

So, my wonderful girlfriend recently got out of the Navy after 14 years of service and went to work in the contracting world. That, combined with our constant need to transport various children and/or furry things, and/or family members made us realize that a 2 door Honda Accord and a Mini Cooper were not necessarily the optimum vehicles for a family with 3 dogs and a 6 year old that loves sports. So, we decided to shop for a new vehicle.

Now, that might sound like a relatively straight-forward process, but let me assure you, IT ISN’T!! We researched exhaustively to find the perfect vehicle. First, we planned on buying slightly used, but as we shopped, we realized that in the current market we just weren’t saving much money by going that route. So we bought new.

This is where the subject of this blog comes in. Steeped as I am in automotive lore and knowledge, I knew that I’d be offered things I didn’t need. The thing that astonished me was how many things I was offerred that NOBODY needs. I was also surprised at the things that were told to me that were flat out untrue, and in some cases, illegal!

You see, there is a law called the “Right to repair” act, that basically states that new car dealers cannot block ANYONE out of the repair business. Otherwise, they would have an instant monopoly on the repair market. As we all know, monopolies are really, really bad for consumers. When we bought our new CRV we were told that unless we used “HONDA” name brand oil, we’d void the warranty! This is categorically untrue. Motor oil is standardized, and is regulated. As long as the oil has the API logo on it, that oil is safe for use in your car. Now, there are some exceptions like turbocharged engines, and diesel engines, and there are some oils that are better than others. Now the dealers realy, really want you to come in for all of your service needs so that they can sell you very high profit maintenance services when the time comes. Frequently, those services include items that the FACTORY doesn’t mention- they are DEALER recommendations. Keep in mind your warranty is a FACTORY warranty so it is what they say, not what the dealership says, that matters. This information can be found in your owners manual. So, in a nutshell, if you want to maintain your new car yourself, do it! Use the recommended weight and type (synthetic is best) of oil, and change it on the specified interval. Keep records (we do this for our customers) so that if there is ever a warranty failure, you can prove you have done your part. If the dealer tries to tell you otherwise, tell them they are breaking the law. If they give you any static, call the manufacturer of the oil you use- they will be on your side 100%!!. Gas Prices

A note about gas prices:

Well it is that time of the year again folks, time to bit@h about gas prices and blame the incumbent. Pretty soon all of the meaningless drivel about filling your tank in the morning because there are less elves in the nozzles will start up again.

So, public service announcement about what you CAN do:

Use less gas.

Step one: Drop the Dale Earhardt Jr act and drive like your second grandma’s cousin twice removed. Simply put, use less than 1/2 throttle at all times. Cruising at 60 or 70 in most passenger cars (you truck folks might need to slow down) is reasonably efficient but accelerating hard will drop your mileage BIG time. Like 30-40%.

Step two: Listen to me and repeat. “I will check my tire pressures once a week.” See my tire pressure blog for instructions. If you want, set tire air pressures approximately 1-2 psi higher than manufacturer specified number when COLD. This nets a slight (2-5%) improvement in fuel economy.

Step three: See your mechanic. I know you think this is gratuitous on my part but note I said see your mechanic, not see me. A good tech can tell you what maintenance (There goes the “prepostrous” cry again) you are neglecting. Changing to synthetic oil may help slightly, making sure your oil is changed on time helps slightly, and services such as fuel induction cleaning services can help if needed. Oh and if you are driving around with your Check Engine Light on, you are wasting fuel, so fix your stuff!

Long story short, follow the steps, save some $$ and help the environment out. All of these things make your tailpipe a cleaner place, too. I can show you the numbers to back this up: if we all improved our fuel economy by 1 mpg (5% improvement) we’d use about $75,000,000 LESS per day. That is real saving folks, so let’s get with the program.

I change my own oil

This statement always has the ability to scare me, for so many reasons. I will start off with this: the most neglected cars I see belong to people that change their own oil. Yes, sir, they do. Uh-huh. Every three thousand miles. There are a million good reasons to change your oil, and very good reasons to pay a professional to do this for you.

Why you SHOULDN’T change your own oil :

We charge $25-30 for an oil change, and half the time there is a special going on. You can save maybe 10 dollars buy buying cheap stuff and doing it yourself. Is the hassle really worth ten bucks?

Unless you are such an enthusiast that you have a lift in your garage and a set of tools that rivals those of a Professional Technician you shouldn’t bother. In the event anything goes wrong (stripped drain plug, jammed filter, damaged plug seal, oil cap stuck) you may have to tow your car to a shop to have it fixed. That tow will cost more than you can save by doing your own oil changes for a year.

You probably do not have easy access to info like maintenance schedules, fluid capacities, fluid type recommendations, etc. Yes, you can find all of these if you look, but really- that is our job. You do your job and be good at it. We do ours, and we’re good at it.

You WANT a pro under your hood on a regular basis. We will spot things you don’t, and believe me, scheduling a repair is WAY better than having an unplanned one. Some repairs cannot be predicted, but you should do everything you can to catch the ones that can (and most of them can be caught early).

Liability. Yes, that is a dirty, dirty word, but I said it. Simply put, we have legal liability- if the filter goes kaput and your engine goes off like a firework, you don’t have to pay 4000$ to get a new one. You have no legal recourse if a guy in his backyard (or you) mess up your car. Believe me, it happens. I have replaced about a dozen engines over the years from botched services (botched at other shops, we’ve never botched one here, thank God- and thank the QA process).

Why you SHOULD let us change your oil :

Can you reset your oil change reminder lamp? We do that, free of charge, with every oil change.

Do you know how to check your brakes, suspension, lights, filters and fluids? We do. Free again. That’s right, no charge to you. We don’t high pressure sell, either. If we find stuff wrong, we’ll hand you an estimate and tell you what you need. If you want us to do the work, great, that is what we are here for! If not, great, we still love you (just please take care of your car)!

Can you set the pressures in your tires CORRECTLY (see blog on this topic)? We do that too, free with every oil change.

You make an appt (or just call, we can almost always fit you in), come in, have a cup of coffee (free) in our comfortable, climate controlled, waiting area with free wi-fi, and hang out for about 1/2 hr. You hand us 25-30 bucks, we chat about your car and what your best plan for caring for it is, then off you go.

Building the relationship with your auto mechanic BEFORE you have a breakdown is crucial. When you have seen us 2 or 3 times for maintenance services, you can feel confident when you need us for a repair. Our goal is and always has been “right the first time, every time” and we are pretty awesome at meeting it. You don’t get to know that until you’ve been here, though.

In a nutshell, get a PRO at a Professional Auto Repair Facility (not a guy in his back yard) to change your oil! It is WORTH it!!!!

What happened to my A/C?

Hi Everyone!

Well, it is that time of year again! The temps have been low 70s for a couple of weeks, and then all of a sudden, WOW! We have our first 85 degree day. Everyone hops in that car that has been sitting in the sun for 8 hours, turns the fan all the way up, sets the A/C to mx and….sweats in the boiling hot air pouring from the dash because the A/C is not working.

So you need your A/C fixed; what should you, as a consumer know?

Ok, here are the basics. The A/C in your car works by compressing and expanding a gas called a refrigerant. commonly known by the R-12 (which is no longer in use) brand name Freon, this gas ABSORBS heat (kinetic) energy from the air as it is expanded inside the A/C system.

Your A/C system is complex enough to defy a layman’s description in this short blog. However, there are some basics you should know as a consumer to better understand A/C repairs.

Ok, if your A/C doesn’t work, you need a professional. This is a system that typically cannot be repaired by a layman.

The GOOD NEWS: Most shops do an A/C inspection for free and provide an estimate for repairs. Keep in mind if the electrical control systems have problems, that is electrical work and will carry a diagnostic charge for troubleshooting.

Fianlly some Do’s and Dont’s

DO: Get a professional to diagnose and fix your A/C system.

DO: Your homework and be informed. Many auto A/C system last for 10+ years so odds are if you have a failure, you will not be familiar with the terminology and functions of the parts that need to be replaced.

DO: Get a second opinion if you are skeptical. These can be expensive repairs, and we want you to know where your money is going and why.

DON’T: Just buy the top-off can from the parts store and pack some extra refrigerant in the system. This could cause high system pressure and damage components that might currently function. A/C systems cannot work with air in them. Therefore, topping off ALWAYS creates a system with non-pure refrigerant that will cause incorrect pressures. Also, frequently incorrect or insufficient A/C oil levels result, which can cause additional failures.

DON’T: Use low quality re-manufactured or used parts. Every-time an A/C system must be opened, the refrigerant must be evacuated and at the completion of service, recharged. This part of the job usually costs around 110.00. Using cheap parts WILL result in a you spending additional money on your car!

A Diagnosis Is…

Ok, many, many people, even so-called “mechanics” do not understand the process of troubleshooting a problem on a modern automobile. This little discussion is to help you, as vehicle owners understand what needs to be done during a diagnosis and why it is important for a professional to do that.

For the purposes of this discussion, a “Diagnosis” is referring to computer diagnosis or electrical testing, NOT a brake check, basic A/C check, noise check, etc.

Myth #1: The computer will tell you everything.

Fact: Not only no, but heck no. The car has an onboard computer that monitors the outputs of the sensors on the engine (input) and controls the components of the engine management system (output controls). The computer monitors all of these circuits and if one of those circuits is not performing as expected a code indicating which circuit has the problem is stored. The computer DOES NOT test the COMPONENT, nor does it test the wiring. The computer simply raises a red flag to indicate a value is not what it was programmed to expect.

Myth #2: (Insert Auto Parts Store Name Here) can do a diagnosis for free!

Fact: Performing a diagnosis correctly is difficult, requires extensive knowledge and training, expensive tools, and time to perform the needed tests. Access to very precise and accurate service information is also frequently needed. All that a parts store can do is retrieve the trouble codes stored in the computer. That is called “pulling codes” or a “computer scan”. That is NOT a diagnosis; it is the first step of the process of diagnosing a car. A parts counter worker does not have the ability to perform the rest of the steps to isolate the cause of a stored code. Also keep in mind auto parts stores make a profit by selling parts. They will be more than happy to sell you parts based on a computer scan, and if that doesnt’ fix your car, they do not care. Shops get paid to fix cars . We don’t get paid until we fix your car, which is a heck of an incentive to get it done right, on time.

Myth #3: It is cheaper just to ‘try’ a couple of things first than to pay for a diagnosis.

Fact: This gets more people in trouble than anything else. The situation now becomes complicated by that fact that someone not capable of determining the cause of a problem has tried to solve that problem. Quite frequently an inadvertent problem is caused that complicates the original issue. Diagnosing one problem is difficult enough, but doing it when someone else has complicated the issue with the installation of unknown quality materials or improper installation can be impossible. See myth #4 for an extension of this.

Myth #4: Putting on a new part eliminates that part as a possible cause of the problem.

Fact: So sorry, Charlie. I have a saying I stole from an unknown tech writer years ago. New is an acronym. N.E.W. Never, Ever, Worked. As many as 2% of brand new parts are non-functioning right out of the box, depending on the quality level of the part . If you cannot accurately test a part on the car, how do you know your “new” part works? Also, the parts store isn’t perfect. Sometimes you get re-boxed warranty defects that make it back onto the shelf. See above section about complicating things.

Ok, some tips:

A good Diagnosis will cost you approximately 75-150 dollars depending on the shop. A technician who is not being paid to perform that service is NOT going to spend time trying to be as accurate as possible. Keep in mind technicians are paid by productivity. They do not like to work for free any more than anyone else. Therefore, you must pay them for their time if you want the job done right. You get what you pay for. A free diagnosis at the auto shop is simply a gimmick to get you there. Once you are there they will either A: bill the time back in the job, or B: tell you if you want accurate testing, you have to pay for it.

Ask for and recieve the results of any testing performed in writing. Even if you don’t understand it, if there is a conflict, a professional will understand. Keep records. A good shop keeps all of that information on file for future use.

Ask before you approve: We don’t charge for the diagnosis if we can’t fix it. If you decline the repair, that is different, you are still responsible for the fee. Some shops charge no matter what.

Don’t expect to get the diagnosis for free if we do the work. The diagnosis is the expensive, time consuming part that requires the highly trained technician. Parts can be changed by people with much lower skill levels and usually without expensive testing equipment. Why would we give away the part that takes all of the tools and the talent? Should I fix my Car?

There comes a time in the life of every vehicle where it is time to make certain, often difficult decisions concerning whether to keep the car and make repairs, or simply replace it. In this article I want to explore this often vastly misunderstood topic, and try to give you the information you need to make the right decision for you. This is important because new(er) cars are expensive! Even a six-year old Honda Accord V6 with 80,000 miles on it will sell for over 13,000$!!!

Ok, the first thing I want to do is go over is all of the things that we WON”T factor into this discussion. For the purposes of this article your vehicle is transportation, and fits your needs. If you’re adding in factors like your love of your car, your simple desire for a new(er) car, need for a totally different category of auto, etc. then you’ll have to account for your factors on your own. I can only be a technical and financial adviser on this topic- you’ll have to do the emotional stuff on your own!

The basic rule for the vast majority of these decisions is the old adage “It’s always cheaper to keep her”. To really understand this you need to realize that the used car market is more expensive than ever. A basic 4 door economy car that runs, passes a safety inspection, and has a functioning A/C will sell for over 2000$. That sets the floor for auto repair approximately at that number. If you can get your car running and in good shape for less than that, it is almost always the best route. Obvious exceptions are cars that are very old (over 20) or have so many miles (300,000+) that there is a significant risk of other, very expensive repairs in the not too distant future. You have to realize that that floor of 2000$ is not for a car that does not or will not need work. Almost every car out there with over 100k miles on the odometer needs some work. Many cars have relatively little needed maintenance in the first 90,000 miles. Therefore, you have to remember that if you’re going to replace your car, you have to leave room in the budget for repairs to the new car- which could be just as much as the repairs on the car you already have!

Basic cost of ownership is another key topic. Every car has an average yearly maintenance cost. This cost is the estimated total of the amount needed to keep that car running and driving for 10 years and 120,000 miles, divided by ten. For most cars this number os around 1500$. The more your car costs, the higher that number will be. Remember if you decide to replace that the person before you got the cheap years- the first 3-5 years and 40-70k miles are the most reliable years in a car’s life. After that the average yearly investment is likely to be more than that average number. Maintaining your older car might actually be cheaper, depending on the make and model of the car, especially since you know the maintenance history of your car! Another key factor in favor of keeping your old car is the fact that the majority of depreciation occurs in the first 3 years and 40k miles of the life of your car. The car will lose 30-50% of its new car sale price in this time. Conversely, if you have a 10 year old car with 150k miles on it, it will not much value at all, even if you drive it for another 6 years and 100k miles! The older a car is, the cheaper it is per mile to drive it (mainly because of the lack of depreciation).

Other lesser, but still important factors to consider include insurance costs (can you keep simple liability on your old car?), do you tend to be “hard” on cars, and if you drive very little. If the answer to any of those three is “yes” then there are more savings to be had staying with “ole Fred”.

Don’t fall in the “fuel economy” trap. Unless you drive A LOT, you probably won’t get a large enough savings in fuel economy to offset the increase in expenses. If you commute 25+ miles one way to work, you ca take advantage of improvements in economy but even the difference between a truck (15 mpg city) and a prius (40 mpg city) only works out to about $4.21 per day (1500$ per year) if you drive the “average” of 12,000 miles per year. Once you factor in depreciation it’s almost never worth it to upgrade to get fuel economy (now buying a 2000$ Honda Civic to get a 20 mpg improvement when you drive 20000 a year is a whole different story).

To conclude, it’s usually cheaper to keep the car you have. If you happen to need or want new car because you need a bigger, smaller, faster, lighter, cooler, slower or just plain shinier car, then you should get one. Just remember that it won’t be cheaper! Drive happy!

Value, Value, Value

I get phone calls nearly every day from customers desperately trying to save money on their car repairs. The thing that saddens me the most is that they don’t listen to professionals that are genuinely out there to take the best care of their customers possible. There is a saying:

“There will always be someone who can make something a little worse and sell it a little cheaper, and those who consider price alone are this man’s lawful prey.” This saying holds true in auto repair more than most industries. Allow me to explain why:

For the last 25 or so years, a large percentage of our youth have shifted their focus from tinker toys, legos, fort building and hot rodding to video-gaming, mine-crafting, and other less mechanical pursuits. The percentage of the population that has the skills and inclination to handle complex auto repair has rapidly decreased. Also, cars are more reliable than ever before, and our customers are driving them for more miles, and keeping them for longer. This has yielded a large increase in the demand for tires, oil changes and maintenance. The “easy stuff”, if you will. The vast majority of shops out there will just focus on the easy stuff. They run “loss leaders” advertising specials (buy 3 tires get one free!) to attract a large number of customers, then they run them through, sell everything they can to every one of them, ever pursuing sales goals and profits.

There’s a problem here: Their goal was never to FIX your car, or CARE for your needs. Why build relationships when you just run another sale to fill your bays? That cheap price on those tires or that oil change? You gave it back on the upsale items that you bought. Did you really need that alignment? Were those tie-rods actually bad? The seller that gives away those tires MUST make upsells to stay in business. They have the biggest incentive ever to high pressure sell, and err on the side of selling a new part, because if they don’t they lose bonuses, their jobs, their paychecks. Feeding their families requires that they turn those coupons into profitable jobs.

To make it worse (yes there’s more!) the upsale items you’ll buy are usually lower quality for more $$!! Every parts store has multiple part lines. You can get the good ball joints or the cheap ones. The good alternator or the cheap one, etc, etc. A pro can look up the part numbers and tell you what you bought. Regardless of warranty, why pay more for the cheap stuff than the good stuff?

Consider the cheap alternator. Sure, you’ll get a one-year warranty on it, amybe even more. It will still cost several hundred dollars, and guess what- if it fails, where will you be? I bet you won’t be just happily running a meaningless errand and have plenty of time to drop by the shop to wait for 4 hours to get it changed again. You’ll be ticked, and you should be. Why? Because even “cheap” auto repair is really expensive! It’s really aggravating when your day or week is ruined by dealing with repairing an item that you already repaired! This is the biggest reason why customers are unqualified to select the parts used on their cars. They simply do not have access to the information to allow them to determine which parts have the best value- balancing price and a very low failure percentage.

We install hundreds of parts each week- we KNOW which ones are good and which ones have unacceptable quality issues. We select parts that allow us to do a job we can be proud of, fixed right and not likely to fail again. Yes, there is a markup on parts we sell. That markup is what you pay for a pro to select, find, install and warranty a part for your car. Usually customers perceive the markup to be higher than it is, because they select the CHEAPEST part they can find from anywhere (usually a Chinese web-site) and use the base number without accounting for shipping or taxes, and try to compare that with the part that is high-quality, and in stock right here, plus sold by an installer- not a retailer. Even if you were installing the part yourself, can really wait two days to get it? Then if it fails, you have to ship it back, and wait again.

Now factor in labor. If the part you select fails, you have no warranty at all on labor. You’ll have to pay for any troubleshooting time, pay to pull it off, get to the shop, get to UPS to ship it back, receive the new one, then wait while the tech installs it (on your $). So you’ll have waited 3 days and paid again for a job that you already paid for once. You’ll probably have spent more than you would have if you just bought a good quality part the first time, AND you’ll have been car-less for days. Where is the value in that?

When I saw all of these things emerging in our industry, I was appalled. I feel that we as service professionals are more akin to doctors and dentists than fast food employees. I hate the “don’t you want fries, an apple pie, and a go-large with that”? I resolved to try to deliver the best bang for the buck that I could manage. Here’s how we do that:

It’s All about Compromise

Hello!
First, please allow me to start off by apologizing; it has been far too long since my last post. The inspiration for today’s post comes from a conversation with a customer and acquaintance, that is interested in improving the original performance from his ’04 Chevrolet Suburban. He’d already installed a cold air intake, and was interested in obtaining more performance. He theorized that his new K&N intake was adding so much air that the engine computer now needed reprogramming to “put” the additional fuel into the truck. I hated to burst his bubble that it wasn’t quite that simple. Even though a cold air intake does definitely make a difference in the net volume of air that can enter an engine, it does not yield an improvement that woud put the ECM “out of range” to where the original equipment programming would no longer be adequate. Consequently, the performance gains from simple programming, while real, would be relatively minimal. Dyno testing that I have done in the past ‘before and after” for cold air intakes, exhausts, and software have netted around 8-12% for all three components. This brings me to the heart of our converation: “Why”?

The answer is that an engine is a “system” not a “part” in a car. Air intake is a “system”, not a “part”. Exhaust? Yep, you guessed it- it’s a system. Upgrading a part of a system does not necessarily improve flow through the whole system. IMHO, the improvement from a cold air intake comes mainly from the decrease in inlet temperature, allowing denser air, which can be paired with more fuel. The net improvement to flow when paired with a stock throttle body, intake manifold, camshaft, and valves is relatively small. Air intakes are cheap and easy to design. Automotive engineers are really smart guys. If they could install a slightly larger intake, and make more power, they would do it from the factory. Ditto the exhaust, ditto the software. Why do these aftermarket parts make an improvement, then, you ask?

The answer lies in the fact that automakers are limited by compromise in their system designs. Cost, emissions, performance, noise, vibration, fuel economy, etc are all factors that must be accounted for by the engineer. In the case of the intake and exhaust, they are looking to limit the noise and reliability from the systems, and that causes them to use designs that are slightly more restrictive. So you can go to the noisier parts and get slightly better flow. Just don’t expect too much! After installing them, a programmer can help slightly as well. Just don’t expect too much! The stock system is pretty good at compensating for adjustments to air flow. Your performance increase from programming in a stock V8 GM probably has more to do with EGR reduction and ignition timing than air/fuel mapping. These are adjustments to the “system”. So we KNOW there will be a compromise! Where is it? In the case of the software the compromise is in increased combustion chamber temperatures, increased exhaust temperatures, and increased production of oxides of Nitrogen, CO, and CO2. This results in decreased engine life, and decreased catalytic converter life- these are HUGE turn-offs to automotive engineers. Rememer, there’s no free horsepower- it ALWAYS has a cost.

If you really want big power, and not just inexpensive incremental upgrades, you go whole hog and put in a “shorter” differential gear, or super/turbo charge the thing. It’s expensive (especially the forced induction upgrade) but it’ll wake it up- you will notice a LARGE difference. However, these complex aftermarket systems are usually beyond the ability of the average person (even the average technician) to install or repair, and they are less reliable than the stock setups. Obtaining service parts for forced induction systems can be very challenging as well.
Want a cheaper method with the maximum in reliability? Buy a vehicle with higher levels of stock performance! An 04’ Silverado with a 4.8L V8 is worth essentially the same as one with a 5.3L V8. If your 4.8 is feeling a little “soft” do yourself a favor and find a truck with a 5.3L and buy that first! If, at that point, you still want more than the first step is finding a PROFESSIONAL with experience in performance upgrades and having realistic expectations before you begin making changes!

Holidays & Winterization

Thankfully, this topic only comes up once a year! With the Thanksgiving holiday followed immediately by the Christmas holidays (or whatever you celebrate, there are many of them, based on your religious preference or lack thereof- we’re auto technicians, not politicians) many of us get a little um….punch drunk with everything we need to handle around this time of year. Personally, I’m just recovering from umpiring fall baseball and running in fall marathon season, so I’m just glad of a chance to sit down and blog about cars.
Winterization.

Ok, it’s pretty minimal these days. We need to make sure you are up to date on your oil change, check the antifreeze, belts, cooling system, and run a test to verify your battery, alternator, and starting systems are healthy. As always, we’ll take a peek at the tires and brakes, and look at the wipers. To be truthful, if you’re seeing us regularly, these things have been getting checked. If you haven’t been seeing us regularly, what’s wrong with you? KIDDING! If you haven’t had your car in to a shop for a while, this really is a good time to do it.

The difference is simply that we combine temperature related winter stress on the car with holiday travel stess, and it means things that could have been left for a while longer in less stressful seasons are more likely to rear their ugly heads (at the worst possible time). Think of it this way: Do you really want to deal with a car problem at any time between the Monday before Thanksgiving and the first of February? Of course not (you never want to deal with a car problem, ever, but it’s really bad when you’ve a car full of kids and luggage 6 hours from home on I-95 in a rainstorm).

Keeping that in mind, the best way to ensure the best odds of avoiding car-related stress is to prepare. If you’re due for an oil change, great- come in, get the oil change and we’ll check for trip for FREE! If you’re not due for an oil change, come in and the maintenance inspection is simply 27$. We’ll check the brakes, tires, lights, wiper, battery, suspension, exhaust, filters and fluids (plus some other things) and we’ll make a list. We’ll check it twice. Then we’ll find out- oh wait- sorry, got a bit carried away there. We’ll make a list, tell you what items are highest priority, and what to expect in the future, and you can decide what to fix now and what to wait on. If we think you shouldn’t take the car on a trip, we’ll tell you that, too.

Really, that’s all you need to do- our winters here aren’t unduly harsh here so it isn’t that bad. A good battery, good antifreeze, good tires, and good wipers are necessities, and of course the other maintenance items need to be checked at least every 6 months no matter what, so why not check them now. Remember, we never sell unneeded services, and we never create an emergency to push you to buy. Honest service, fair prices, and a smiling face!

A note about “Process”

THIS will be a short blog entry. First, let me begin by expressing that we hope everyone had uneventful travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, and that everyone enjoyed the time they had in the way that makes them happiest!

So, process! Process is a misunderstood term, I believe. When it comes to owning a business, and trying to find ways to ensure customer satisfaction is very high, “Process” becomes almost a living , breathing thing. We have a clearly defined process at our shop, and we monitor that that process is being followed closely. We do this so that when there are (fortunately they are rare) problems, we can quickly isolate the problem. Also, if we find that employees followed the protocol, and a customer was still not satisfied, we can be alerted to changes in our market, and make rational decisions to change policy if as needed.

After 10 years in business we have a clearly defined corporate philosophy. That philosophy is wide ranging and encompasses everything from “have strong, competitive prices”, to “perform high quality work” and less obvious things like “give back to community” and “educate your consumer”. We’ve used that set of “codes” to create our Process that guides our employees from first customer contact to the follow-up after the repair is completed.
You might ask: “Why is this relevant to me”? The answer is simple- the commitment to this process ensures that we’ll deliver the same quality service at a fair price, in a friendly manner, each time you come in.

Check for Trip

I’ve found over the years that drivers typically have next to NO idea why a thorough pre-trip inspection should always be done. I’ve actually heard people say “the meck-a-nicks just want to get your money before the holidays”.

Those types of remarks sadden us; we work very hard, we educate ourselves continuously, we volunteer in the community, we sponsor youth sports teams, yet the perception in the public of auto repair professionals in general is that we are just “trying to get you”.

Tell you what- I’m going to explain why I THINK you should get a pre-trip check before a trip, and YOU make the call.

Now the pre-trip check will NOT find everything that can cause a breakdown (cars are complex machines, and have thousands of critical parts), but it will give you the peace of mind that the major common failure items are checked.

Tire Pressures Revisited

I was online the other night and was part of a conversation related to tire pressures that really brought home how active this topic still is. The actual quote was “My daddy told me to always put the tire pressure to the number on the side of the tire. My daddy didn’t raise no car fool.”

Unfortunately, “Daddy” was wrong. We run across this type of thing a lot- people remember a datum from a long time ago, given by someone who is not a professional, and it’s stuck. Cars, their tires, their maintenance, all of these things have been changing at a rapid pace for many years. We go to dozens of classes each year specifically to keep up with these changes. That being said- listen to us!

Setting your tire pressures is a remarkably misunderstood topic for many people, so I’m going to give you the straight info. The key is remembering that tire manufacturers and auto manufacturers have slightly different interests when calculating and advertising recommended pressures. You want to follow what the AUTOMAKER says. You own a car, not just some tires.

The vehicle manufacturer will put their recommended tire pressures on a sticker located in the driver door jamb and in the owners manual. IN MOST CASES THIS IS THE NUMBER YOU WANT TO USE. The vehicle manufacturer takes into account the weight of the vehicle, what ride quality is required, and the suspension geometry of the vehicle. On most PASSENGER CARS this number will be between 28-35 psi. Light trucks have a whole different set of operating parameters depending on the amount of weight the vehicle will be carrying.

Tire manufacturers will put their MAXIMUM recommended pressure on the sidewall of the tire. This is NOT the optimum number, and usually operating with the tires at this pressure will result in poor ride quality, reduced traction, and reduced tire life. Tires manufacturers make tires, and usually there are a variety of vehicles that will use the same tire size so the tire manufacturer cannot issue a recommended pressure for your vehicle specific application. DO NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM PRESSURE STAMPED ON THE TIRE FOR ANY REASON.

My personal recommendation is to use the tire pressure numbers inside the driver’s door or vehicle owners manual.

How to choose a shop

In the modern era, we have more options than ever before for finding out information. Sometimes, we actually get overwhelmed with it, and get too MUCH info! I’m sure many of us feel that way about our cars.

Questions like: How do I know I can trust my mechanic? How can I know my mechanic is correctly trained? How do I know I am paying a fair price? How can I tell that quality parts are being used?

The internet does a great job of giving us access to all of this information, this post is just a guide to tell you how to find it and what pitfalls to avoid.
